Planning to build a windmill or a wind turbine for your own home? You are not the first person to do so. You are probably raring to reduce your energy costs, as well as do something worthwhile for the environment on the side. However, before you embark on this project, do go over the items below. 1. Local laws. Check the local zoning laws simply to find out whether or not erecting a windmill for home use is allowed in your area. Restrictions may be imposed on positioning, height, size of blades, and, especially in sub-urban areas, the maximum noise or sound level that is produced.
2. Costs. The cost of building a windmill is pegged at an average of $32,000 for a 10-kilowatt system. Installation, on the other hand, is anywhere between $6,000 and $25,000. This may sound like huge amount of money. However, if you bear in mind that a windmill's average life span is 30 years and that it takes minimal effort and money to maintain one, you will be changing your mind soon enough. If you still need some convincing, then you should know that some states, including California, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts, either grant funds for the construction of windmills or offer rebates that are meant to reimburse as much as 50% of the total start-up cost.
3. Wind speed. In order for a windmill to produce adequate electricity for an average American home, the wind speed in the area must be at an average of 10 miles per hour. Anything below that and the windmill will produce no output at all.
4. Space and height. A windmill must not be shorter than 90 to 120 feet. This is to ensure that it is high enough to rise above the turbulence on the ground brought about by the presence of trees, buildings and housing structures, and the natural terrain of the area. The windmill also has to be standing on land that is at least 1 acre in area.
5. The plan. As in any project, it is wisest to have a plan before taking the first step. Preferably, your plan must be sound and has already been tested. If you have had no previous experience on how to build a windmill, opt for a plan that is easy to understand and execute, and that calls for materials that are readily available in your area and relatively economical. Keeping the cost at low levels will be of great help particularly when you will be computing for the return on your investment.
Admittedly, trying to build a windmill or wind turbine for your home is a large project to complete, even with outside help, and more so if you are a first-timer. If it gets too overwhelming, focus not on the job at hand but on the benefits you will enjoy as soon as the windmill is done. Surely, when the idea of no longer paying for your electrical consumption takes hold in your mind, you will find renewed energy to finish your windmill.
