Indifference is lack of accurate perception, lack of sensitivity to things of the Spirit. This was one bane of Esau's life career. He cared less about what God had said to Abraham and to Isaac, his father. He bothered not to study the covenant and the promises. It did not matter to him whether he was In God's will or not. His right of being the first-born son, that made him surrogate head and priest of the family; the progenitor and administrator of the family heritage; including the name God gave them to call Him for immediate results in prayer - these did not strike any cord within his heart.
Esau was very uncertain about his position in his father's house and decided to question the truth of his birthright: "Of what value is my birthright to me then?" Doubt is an effect of unbelief. Fear, worry and anxiety are signs of doubt and unbelief. Esau was troubled and afraid when he returned home hungry, even when he owned all things in the house. We keep afloat when we walk in the light of God's word concerning us, but we sink and get drowned when we walk otherwise. Many are there today who are cast down and overcome by sin, self and Satan because they fail to walk in the light of God's word of promise for their individual lives. Continuing in doubt/unbelief and not walking in the light of God's word and promises, will eventually lead to perdition. But you can avert this danger.
Quite unlike Esau who showed indifference to the things that pertain to his good pleasure, we will never cry for a blessing, because we value the grace of God. Esau took it all as a matter of chance. He never gave thought to God's call on his life, and was casual about what He has said concerning him as he traded it out for something immediate. Out of all the mistakes of Esau, indifference to spiritual things, was the mother of them all - the basis of all his deviations. His attitude towards the things of God tells us that the way a man regards his relationship with God determines the way he walks.
Daniel was a man who gave up all the meat and the dainties of Babylon because he would not defile himself. Some might say he was proud; how could he consider as defilement, the sweet food and drinks for which even kings scrambled? But that tells us what value he placed on his walk with God. Joseph, in his own time, refused Potiphar's wife's advances with all the attendant promises. He preferred being naked to destroying his fellowship with God, even when to succumb, would have got Him gorgeously dressed. He ran for his life and his faith in God. It all looked foolish then, until he ascended the throne in Egypt. God hates your lack of sensitivity to the things of the spirit. Do not be indifferent; it pays with a bad coin!
