All Time Greatest
Many stand-up comedians are a flash in the pan, briefly popular but with no real longevity to their career. Few stand-up comedians are able to maintain their creativity over the years; rehashing material is all too common. A select few stay current and brilliant and continue to develop fantastic bits, while the others are quickly forgotten.
Here are three comedians whose brilliant, cutting-edge work has earned them the title of comedy royalty:
George Carlin. Carline was one of the greatest comedians who ever lived. He had a natural gift for timing and innuendo. What is especially interesting about Carlin's career, however, is how it evolved over time. He began his career as a clean cut standup guy, and changed over time into a rebellious iconoclast whose jokes took on the people and organizations in power.
Carlin has many classic routines from the 1970s that are still famous. He stayed relevant much later than this, though, and performed in several HBO specials. He was working up until his death, and was releasing everything from books to DVDs almost until the end.
Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry Seinfeld's show, "Seinfeld," was the top show in the United States for many years. The show's finale had 75 million viewers! Even when broadcast as reruns, old episodes of Seinfeld are very popular with viewers.
Seinfeld was a real trendsetter. His brand of humor makes use of dry sarcasm and witty observation of the most mundane and trivial aspects of daily life. Every young comedian pretty much now uses some of these techniques in their own work. For humor that is very intelligent and clever, Seinfeld can't be beat.
Dave Chapelle is also an incredibly funny man. While he's been under the radar during the last few years, he's still a fan favorite of many and a huge figure in the world of comedy, which goes to show just how strong the impact of his work has been. His show, the "Dave Chapelle Show," commanded huge audiences for its two seasons. Chapelle was renewed for a third season but opted out due to stress and creative issues with the show's format. Still, the show received wide public and critical acclaim during its two year run.
Chapelle is a subversive comedian. He uses humor to tackle very controversial topics. People who like this brand of comedy will really enjoy some of what he's done. From his own series to the movies he's acted in, there are always some laughs to be had whenever looking at Chapelle's body of work.
