Where can I sell my record collection? Who do I sell my collection to? These sound like fairly basic questions but if you are confronted by lists of Websites, advertisements and numerous pieces of information on the internet and elsewhere it can seem a little confusing.
The first question people usually ask themselves when considering selling their records is am I still attached to them. Normally the records have been stored away for some years but when they are retrieved from the corner of a loft or at the back of a cupboard somewhere only memories usually emerge. Most people have a lot of memories attached to their records from their youth and can get quite attached when sifting through their old collection. If you ask yourself do I still play the records and the answer is no and you only look at them once every few years then it is probably tome to consider selling them. Also the long you store your records the more chance they might deteriorate usually from damp and dust or simply from been knocked about.
If you do decide it is time to sell your collection then the next question normally is, are they worth anything? The value of records is not necessarily determined by the quality of music on offer, it is more to do with the desirability that has developed for certain artists, labels or styles of music. For example Frank Sinatra is recognised as one of the greatest solo artists of all time. But in the record collecting world most of Sinatra's records fetch little or nothing. There are collectible records in nearly every genre from Rock, pop, Soul, Blues and Reggae to classical, Jazz and soundtracks.
You should always do a little research before parting with your collection and the internet offers many different options. There are sites such as Popsike.com which are a vast database of vinyl record sales here and abroad also auction sites are a good way of finding more out about your records. A word of caution though for anyone searching on the internet for record values, there are many variations in records with different issues and pressings so sometimes what might seem to be a gem worth hundreds of pounds often turns out to be only worth a fiver.
Something else which has a strong bearing on the value of a record is condition. If the mint value of a record is £50.00 an item which has been to a lot of parties and has a torn sleeve and marks on the vinyl is virtually worth nothing at all. Modern record collectors have become very fussy about the condition of the items they invest in.
There are two ways of selling your records one is to sell them yourself individually. Auction sites are the most common option for anyone wishing to sell their collection. If you provide a clear and accurate description of the item you are selling then you should not go wrong when auctioning your records. The negative side to selling your own records individually is firstly the work involved. Writing accurate descriptions, taking photos and loading them on to the auction site can take a long time very often with no success at the end. Many records on auction sites do not sell!
The second option is to sell your entire collection to a dealer. It is very important to find a reliable dealer who is willing to by all if not most of your collection. I have been to houses on numerous occasions to find another dealer has been and taken the best records from a collection making it impossible to sell the bulk of the collection remaining. Very often dealers will pretend they are only after certain records and other dealers will by the remaining items, do not be fooled by this ploy!
Some dealers offer free valuations and will give an honest value of your collection. When selling to a dealer you must take into consideration the time and cost involved when selling records professionally. A record dealer will offer you a percentage of the value of the records he thinks is worthwhile when deducting the cost involved when selling the items.
Also it is worth considering when choosing a dealer somebody who is within your area; search for record dealers in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Midlands if that is your own vicinity.
