Astrud Gilberto
OK so it is mid February and I am only now bringing you my top 10 of 2010. I will admit I have found it tough to put together as I have been a little bit all over the place of late. I managed to miss a few albums that I heard great things about (Big Boi and M-Phazes) but I still have amassed a nice list plus a man can only listen to so much.
So without further delay here is my top 10.
10 - Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: Cash Money hero and new queen of hip hop, Minaj mixed R&B and hip hop to fairly good affect but her rhymes and moxy is what pushed her into the top 10. Roman's Revenge was simply viscous.
9 -Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III): I almost missed out on getting into this album. Thankfully I squeezed in a listen and was amazed as Janelle channels a combination of Cee-Lo, Astrud Gilberto and Simon and Garfunkel. An odd mix but those acts came to mind almost instantly. Soft and lush vocals along with some pounding tunes made this a very easy and enjoyable listen.
8 - Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives: These two were made to make music together. After hearing Road to Zion I felt it was inevitable that we'd see these two in the studio together again. Thankfully their album was well shared and tracks like As We Enter, Strong Will Continue and the haunting Patience made for a diverse album conceptually and sonically.
7 - Seal 6: Commitment: Modern R&B needs more of this. Simple but well executed ballads and tracks with a focus on vocals. Seal always could sing and this was just a good collection of tracks that held me from start to finish. Silence was a highlight.
6 - RJD2 - The Colossus: As you would expect from RJD2, The Colossus exhibits a range of influences and guests. With a more indie rock sound (The Glow, Gypsy Caravan) it extruded enough hip hop and soul to make the list. Games You Can Win featuring Kenna and The Shining Path featuring Phonte Coleman were highlights.
5 - Sade - Soldier of Love: Sade Adu's voice is as slick and smoky as ever and still possesses that instantly recognizable ache. Although many people are at war or claim to be when it comes to love, Sade is a war veteran who has been in the field for decades and amongst a sea of rivals she still is one of the generals.
4 - Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: Kanye is back! This album featured one of the best posse cuts of the year in Monster but also showcased some beats and tunes that only Kanye can call his own.
3 - Cee-Lo Green - The Lady Killer: Wow! Cee-Lo's previous albums have had more of a hip hop garnish whereas this is a pure soul album and it is produced to great affect. With a good dose of cheekiness and uplifting pop, Cee-Lo has put together his best album.
2 - Corinne Bailey Rae - The Sea: After soul searching and time away from music, Rae's return has been a triumph. By no means a depressing album, The Sea does run deep and is full of heart ache, however it provides a good amount of sun shine thanks to tracks like Paris Nights/New York Mornings and Closer.
1 - Suff Daddy - The Gin Diaries
Suff Daddy - The Gin Diaries: Predominantly an instrumental album The Gin Diaries is a perfect compliment to a night in with a glass of your favourite poison. Bangers, soulful joints and familiar vocal samples made this a smooth ride. German hospitality at its best.
Honourable mentions: Plan B - The Defamation of Strickland Banks, Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Spit Syndicate - Exile, Jess Harlen - Neon Heartache, and Zion I - Atomic Clock.
