Joe Albany was born on January 24, 1924 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He studied piano as a child and became something of a legend as he progressed in his career. He was a rarity in that he was a white piano player in a musical world dominated by black musicians.
In the early portion of his musical career, his talents weren't initially recognized. In the 1940's, he began to play with Benny Carter, Stan Getz, Lester Young and Georgie Auld's big band. He first recorded his music in 1945 with Georgie Auld. He went on to record with Lester Young in Los Angeles in 1946. He also began to play with Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, where he started to excel in the bebop sound. It is reported that he was, in fact, Charlie Parker's favorite pianist.
The nineteen-fifties and sixties were difficult decades for him. He battled a heroin addiction for years that drew him away from his beloved music. He did record some popular items during this time period, however. In 1957, he recorded "The Right Combination" with Warne Marsh, which was quite a hit. He composed for Anita O'Day in the early nineteen-sixties and with Charles Mingus in nineteen sixty-three.
His daughter wrote a book that detailed her bumpy childhood with her talented yet troubled father. "Low Down: Junk, Jazz, and Other Fairy Tales from Childhood" was penned by Amy Joe in 2004 which provided an intimate insight into the piano player's home life while raising his children. He was married and divorced several times. A 1980 documentary entitled "Joe Albany...A Jazz Life" was also an interesting account of his colorful life.
During the nineteen-seventies, he again emerged on the jazz musical scene. After his relative seclusion in Europe during the previous decades, he was welcomed back into the fold. In 1971 and '72, his music "Joe Albany At Home" and "Proto-Bopper" arrived into the world. In 1974, he played in Copenhagen for Steeplechase, with a bassist named Niels-Henning Orstead Pederson. He also played multiple solos in Italy during the mid-seventies.
In the late nineteen-seventies and early nineteen-eighties, Albany became part of a trio. He played with drummer, Roy Haynes, and bassist Art Davis. He made his last recording in 1981. He died on January 12, 1988.
Joe Albany was a talented musician who made a major impact on the jazz and bebop genre of music. Even though he continually fought his own personal battles with drug addiction and unsuccessful personal relationships, his music still shone through.
