The artist we now know as Big Daddy Kane was born as Antonio Monterio Hardy. Kane was born on September 10th, 1968 in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn New York. In a 2004 interview Big Daddy Kane explained his name change by explaining the Kane part came from his fascination with martial arts movies. The big Daddy part of the name is more mysterious somehow involving an encounter with a young lady during a ski trip.
Kane's rise to fame began in 1984. This was when he met fellow rapper Biz Markie. Kane first developed his reputation by writing lyrics for Biz Markie. Kane and Biz Markie eventually became a part of the Queens based Juice Crew. The Juice crew was a collective of soon to be rap superstars under the leadership of the infamous Marley Marl.
Big Daddy Kane released his debut album in the summer of 1988. The album, "Long Live the Kane" featured production by Marley Marl. Other producers on the album include the world famous Teddy Riley. The album placed hits in the R&B top 40 confirming Kane's rising star status. In 1988, Kane's second album "It's A Big Daddy Thing" went gold climbing to #4 on the R&B/Hip Hop charts.
Despite controversy about his involvement with the Five Percent Nation (a controversial offshoot of the Nation of Islam) Kane's reputation continued to rise. In 1991 B Kane's collaboration with Pat Labelle started long a list of collaborations. Kane has worked on projects with a wide range of artists everyone from fellow rappers Public Enemy to alternative rock mainstays the Red Hot Chili Peppers have called on the talents of Kane.
While the 90's may have seen a decline in record sales for Kane, his reputation did nothing but grow. While not matching the commercial success of past albums "Looks for a Job" is considered an artistic success. Big Daddy Kane also became known as a hype man launching the carriers of other artists most notable Jay-Z.
It was also during the 90's that Big Daddy Kane began his acting career starting in Mario Van Peeples' black western "Posse". In The Movie Kane plays a gambler known as Father Time. His next acting role was in Robert Townsends "Meteor Man", this time playing a gangster known as Pirate.
In 2005 Kane was one of the artists honored during the VH1 hip-hop Honors. The show featured a medley of Kane's hits performed by T.I., Black Thought, and Common. Kane then took the stage putting on an outrageous performance of his hit "Warm It up".
Kane has also become a featured artist of Busta Rhymes' and Q-tip's annual Summer Jam concerts. Taking place in East Rutherford, New Jersey The concert which is sponsored by Hot 97FM seeks to honor the legacy and rich history of New York City hip-hop.
