As the economy continues to nose-dive, it is completely amazing that the lawmakers in Congress just seem to get richer. How can they possibly have a clue as to what the majority of their constituents are going through, when they can live high on the hog and don't have money worries? If they DO have money worries, shame on them because that means that even though they are some of the most well-to-do people in the US, they failed to handle their wealth properly. We should ALL have those problems.
So, the 50 wealthiest Senators and House members have a combined worth of $1.4 billion in 2009, an increase of $85.1 million over 2008. Last year the total combined assets of these same people depreciated by almost $36 million, but that pales in comparison with the amount of debt they managed to pay off, which was $120 million.
And the parties were almost equally divided, with 27 Democrats and 23 Republicans, while 30 House Members and 20 Senators made the top 50 list. The state that made the top of the list was California with 7 people, 4 of whom are women, including Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House.
Here they are, in order of their standing:
1. Senator John Kerry, Democrat, Massachusetts
2. Representative Darrell Issa, Republican, California
3. Representative Jane Harman, Democrat, California
4. Senator Jay Rockefeller, Democrat, West Virginia
5. Representative Michael McCaul, Republican, Texas
6. Senator Mark Warner, Democrat, Virginia
7. Representative Jared Polis, Democrat, Colorado
8. Representative Vern Buchanan, Republican, Florida
9. Representative Frank Lautenberg, Democrat, New Jersey
10. Senator Diane Feinstein, Democrat, California
11. Representative Alan Grayson, Democrat, Florida
12. Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democrat, California
13. Senator Jim Risch, Republican, Idaho
14. Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen, Republican, New Jersey
15. Representative Gary Miller, Republican, California
16. Senator, Bob Corker, Republican, Tennessee
17. Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat, Missouri
18. Representative Kenny Marchant, Republican, Texas
19. Representative Nita Lowey, Democrat, New York
20. Representative Carolyn Maloney, Democrat, New York
21. Senator Olympia Snowe, Republican, Maine
22. Senator Lamar Alexander, Republican, Tennessee
23. Senator John McCain, Republican, Arizona
24. Representative Denny Rehberg, Republican, Montana
25. Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat, Iowa
26. Representative James Sensenbrenner, Jr., Republican, Wisconsin
27. Representative John Campbell, Republican, California
28. Representative Tom Petri, Republican, Wisconsin
29. Representative Parker Griffith, Republican, Alabama
30. Representative Chris Lee, Republican, New York
31. Senator Ted Kaufman, Democrat, Delaware
32. Representative Tom Price, Republican, Georgia
33. Representative Lloyd Doggett, Democrat, Texas
34. Representative John Spratt, Democrat, South Carolina
35. Representative John Linder, Republican, Georgia
36. Representative Fred Upton, Republican, Michigan
37. Representative Bill Foster, Democrat, Illinois
38. Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican, Kentucky
39. Senator Kay Hagan, Democrat, North Carolina
40. Representative Steve Kagen, Democrat, Wisconsin
41. Senator Ben Nelson, Democrat, Nebraska
42. Senator Jeff Bingaman, Democrat, New Mexico
43. Representative Randy Neugebauer, Republican, Texas
44. Senator Johnny Isakson, Republican, Georgia
45. Representative Shelly Berkley, Democrat, Nevada
46. Senator Michael Bennet, Democrat, Colorado
47. Representative Patrick Kennedy, Democrat, Rhode Island
48. Representative Rosa DeLauro, Democrat, Connecticut
49. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat, Oregon
50. Representative Jackie Speier, Democrat, California
Number 50 on that list has her wealth listed at just $5.1 million, while John Kerry has amassed a fortune of $188.6 million. If you were to add President Obama to this list, he would be number 38 and would knock #50 off the list.
It is figures like this, combined with poor choices in Congress, that convince the "average" person that their representatives in Washington are not in touch with their financial issues, or any other aspect of their daily struggle. What's amazing is that the wealth really wouldn't matter if their constituents thought they gave a hoot about what they feel and what they want. But, combine that lack of empathy with their wealth and you have a bunch of people that may very well be voted out of office between now and 2012. Will the top 50 earners on Capitol Hill look a lot different in 2013? I'm betting it will!
