Why can't we respect the Masters in Classic Jazz and not stop at Ray Charles, Miles Davis. There are more!!!
It seems only Ken Burns can capture the essence of the genre. All too many venues have either a bail of hay onstage or smashed guitars. No one will remember the 'Count' or the 'Duke' or Blakey or Tatum, Jamal or Garner. Our contribution to music, The Great American Song Book-Classic Jazz.
Apparently no one is familiar with Classic Jazz or even cares that we aren't keeping it alive. Any comments as to why you believe this wonderful improvisational music is dying?
You are SO RIGHT. There ARE so many people out there that, when you say, "Hey, you heard of Billie Holiday?", they'll reply, "Who's HE". Catch my drift?
I know that the other guy is right when he said "popularity", too. It's a sad state that nobody wants to hear music with substance in it any more. I mean, just listen to "Birth of the Cool" and tell me it's not what it says it is. But then again, even "cool" has been depreciated in this society. Back when it was made, "cool" was even "cooler".
I have noticed a slight backlash, though. See, some jazz cats are so purist, that it turns people off. They shouldn't be like that. That's "hating" territory. If more musicians (and teachers) would just grow up and understand that the expression of music is meant for ALL people, this negativity might stop. But, I know lots of jazz guys who refuse to even acknowledge any other non-improvisational music just because they have gotten so smug in their abilities. Of course, when the jazz cats start mouthing, others turn away. Now, I am not saying that it DOESN'T happen in other forms of music too. I am just saying that 1) it isn't right, and 2) jazz musicians can't AFFORD to be that way.
I agree with you on the fact that black people have pretty much paved the way musically. The Duke was so talented, he would write DIRECTLY from his head, NO HELP. Look at the Marsalis brothers. Ever heard Wynton do "Carnival of Venice?" Mannnnnn, he is unbelievable. An aquaintence of mine's brother actually got to hold his "warm-up" book for him. He said that the book was like 100 pages and that Wynton would play it top to bottom, FAST, while CIRCULAR BREATHING. That was his warm up!
Yeah, there's alot of people who deserve more respect than what they are getting or have gotten. It's a shame.
