The Ryman Auditorium is the symbol of country music. It is located in the heart of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. It receives visitors from all over the world. I live in Nashville and can tell you a little about the Ryman in case you won't to visit when you are in the city.
It is not too hard to find. For one it is right off of Broadway on fifth avenue. It has a very distinctive look and won't be difficult to spot. If it helps, just behind towers what the locals know as the "Batman building." You will know what I mean when you see it. You could swear you are in Gotham City not Nashville. It is interesting to see the mix of the modern skyscraper and a National Historic Landmark like the Ryman nearby.
The front of the auditorium is on fifth avenue, but the actual entrance is around the other side where they have built on a more modern building. This is where portions of the museum are located as well as where you purchase tickets and get information. There is some parking at this entrance, or you can find a place on the street or a nearby parking garage.
The entrance fee for the music is not too bad, about eight dollars the last time I was there. There are several exhibits and various country music memorabilia that you can view under glass. You can also step up onto the stage and have a picture taken. Think of all the big name country music stars and other celebrities who have crossed that stage?
This site also serves as a Nashville wedding venue. A number of couples have done their nuputials on the stage. It is not inexpensive as you might expect, since they could have a concert at the same time.
One note. You shouldn't get the Ryman confused with the new Opry house built out at the Opryland area. This is about 20 minutes from downtown and is where the Opry shows take place at this time.
There are many shows that take place still at the Ryman Auditorium. My wife and I attended a concert there put on by the Temptations a few years back. There really is not a bad seat in the house. We were in the balcony on the very back row and the visibility was good as well as the sound. The acoustics of this building are recognized as some of the best of its type in the country. Other performers who have come here include Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Jon Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Neil Young, and The Four Tops. As you can see while the Ryman is known for country music it certainly has in recent years not limited itself to that genre.
