There is never a right time to tell your child that people like Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny are not real. The fact is you must tell them because it'll be better coming from you than some stranger. The decision as to when to tell your child is difficult and to tell you the truth, there is no right or wrong answer for this. It's really up to you and how you feel about the decision.
As the years go on, your child will begin to realize things and you may not really have to tell them. They may come to you and ask questions about a conversation they heard at school or something they saw on TV or in a movie. The best you can do is answer their questions and be honest about it.
Tell your child the story behind each person you're discussing so they know where they came from and why people believe in them. This will help them have a better understanding of the situation and they won't think you're lying to them and have them wonder what else you've lied about in the past.
You might also consider searching online for the best way to talk to your children about these things. You'll be able to find tips and suggestions for saying the right things and how to handle the questions that may come up when you tell them they're not real.
Once your conversation is over you need to make sure they understand and that they can ask any questions they have and that you'll do the best you can to answer them. If you can't answer them you need to go online and look for them so you can share the correct answer with them. They'll feel better about the situation and they'll trust you.
If you have younger children it's a good idea to tell the older child that they're not ready to hear this conversation so you'd appreciate it if they wouldn't say anything to them about the information they just received and it would be nice if they'd help keep it real for the younger children.
Talking to your children about Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny can be difficult, but you must do it. It's better if it comes from you then for them to make a fool of themselves by talking about it in a conversation.
