I've read the book, but I need more proof that Capote was too sympathetic towards Perry in In Cold Blood. Can anyone please help me?
I"m not sure what you have already. Capote is definitely sympathetic towards Perry, and seems to believe he would have done nothing wrong without Dick. I don't know where in the book to point you, as I don't have a copy here, but there are suggestions about Perry's sad background, his general demeanour of innocence. It's almost like Perry is an abused woman to Dick's domineering man. I think Capote believed him to be a more sympathetic character because Perry stopped Dick from raping the young girl and was overall more "kind"--if that can be said--throughout the whole ordeal. Yes, he was probably too sympathetic, since Perry was there and was involved, and would therefore deserve only contempt, but Capote seemed to be able to justify Perry's behaviour somewhat, as opposed to his clear dislike for Dick--whom Capote saw as the instigator. Even I felt sorry for Perry in the book, and in the movie. Not sure if that's any help at all.
