Did you know that rock music songwriting can employ a popular songwriting technique? Most of the current pop song, country, and gospel follow this technique. Actually, there's no new thing about song structures that was no employed by George Gershwin in the 30s, Cole Porter in the 40s, Elvis Presley in the 50s, the Beetles in the 60s, Elton John in the 70s and currently by the Stones and Willie Nelson. This article is a case study of some of the popular songs you know that you can adapt for your rock songwriting career.
This popular structure of songs that you can use for your rock music songwriting is:
Verse - to - chorus;
Verse - to - bridge - to - verse;
Verse - to - chorus - to- bridge - to - chorus
You could also use variations of the musical structures above.
A lot of Hymns and Christmas carols serve as good examples for the "verse-to-chorus" structure. This Christmas carol "Oh, star of wonder, star of night..." has several verses; but of them is followed by the same chorus.
The Beetles were very popular in their time. They employed the "verse-to-bridge-verse" structure in the song "Yesterday". From the verse, "Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away..." then the bridge "Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say..." then the song returns to the verse. You see how you can use this structure for your rock music songwriting?
Let me give you another example of the verse-to-bride-to verse structure. Check Willie Nelson's song "Crazy". The verse goes like "Crazy, crazy for feeling' so lonely..." then the bridge "Worry, why should I let myself worry..." then song returns to the second verse.
I guess you know these celebrities: Whitney Houston, Miley Cirus, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. In their ballads and their up-tempo song, they sing a short "bridge" before singing the final chorus or verse. The bridge is normally different in melody and lyrics.
