Court Crimson
There are numerous reasons to want to know about grapevine growing. You may want them to cover gaps on your fence, for eating or for growing your own vine. There are a number of varieties to choose from and this may affect where you choose to grow them and how.
When growing your grape vines it is best to place them in a south-facing spot or possibly at southeast or southwest corner. If you are lucky enough to have a sheltered courtyard this ideal as direct sunlight can have a damaging effect on your grapes.
You can grow grapes in the garden, on a fence or indoors. Make sure the soil is around 2 feet deep and use well-rotted farmyard manure or compost from oak, ash and lime trees. Do not use fresh manure as this will burn the vines, while beech tree compost is too acidic. As the plant grows, make sure the plants are not too tied up too tightly as this can cause damage.
Some varieties though are more suitable for some environments than others. If you want a black dessert grape then an excellent option is the famous Black Hamburg variety. It was first planted at Hampton Court in 1768. This type of grape works best planted in a greenhouse or against a south-facing wall. It is said to be one of the easiest types to grow. However it should be noted that it will only produce fruit outdoors after a particularly long, hot summer.
If you want a vine for both wine and eating a strawberry vine is ideal. It is called this because the red grapes are said to have a flavor similar to strawberries and so should appeal to anyone with a love of sweet tasting fruit. It is recommended to grow it against a warm, sunny wall for the best results.
For someone wanting to cover a gap in a fence or to provide a bit more color then you may want to plant a Crimson Glory Vine. The heart-shaped leaves are distinctive and turn bright red in autumn. The grapes are not recommended for eating however and so it is probably best to strictly use this as a decorative plant.
If you want a good return on your effort then Black Vine is a variety for your needs. Boskoop Glory is a variant of Black Vine that is best for people who want to grow grapes for wine and get a good crop from it. It can also be used as a dessert if you prefer.
It generally takes around two years to get an established plant and around three years to get fruit for dessert or wine. It will take some time to get the most return from your grapevine growing but with the right variety for your own individual needs you will get the best return from your efforts.
