The writer Mark Twain had a similar premonition, though his strange dream foretold the death of his brother, Henry. One night, while sleeping at his sister's house, Twain dreamt he saw Henry as a corpse, laid out in a metallic burial case supported by two chairs in a sitting room. A bouquet of white flowers, containing a single crimson bloom, was lying on Henry's chest.

As Mark Twain stood over the corpse in the makeshift burial room, he noted that while other victims of the disaster were placed in simple wooden coffins, his brother was lying in the same sort of metallic case he had seen in his dream. Then an elderly lady came up and placed a bouquet on Henry's chest. Although the bouquet was a white one, it had a single red rose in its centre.
