While Steel Wheels sounded a bit calculated in the sense that the Rolling Stones were using sort of a cookie cutter format derived loosely from Tattoo You, Voodoo Lounge comes across initially as a classicist effort. It's as if the Stones are reaching back into their past and away from the stadium rock blueprint of Tattoo You and Steel Wheels, and the sleazy blues of the leadoff track "Love Is Strong" seems to indicate this. But make no mistake, it's just as calculated as Steel Wheels.
Recorded after Mick Jagger's 1993 solo effort Wandering Spirit, his best solo effort to date, and Keith Richards' 1992 effort Main Offender, the difference this time around is that the Stones sound like that are not trying as hard and are just having fun with their craft. While songs such as "Sparks Will Fly," and "You Got Me Rocking" sound like material on Tattoo You and Steel Wheels, numbers such as "New Faces" sound like the Baroque Pop from Between The Buttons and Aftermath, released almost thirty years earlier. "I Go Wild" on the other hand has the nihilistic and sexually violent qualities that would have felt right at home on Undercover. Keith Richards' two vocal contributions "The Worst" and "Thru And Thru" sound unlike anything that has every been featured on a Stones album prior to Voodoo Lounge, and that's not to say they are innovative by any means, just fresh. The same could be said about "Moon Is Up." "Out Of Tears" is quite possibly their most revealing ballad while "Blinded By Rainbows" is both socially conscious and serenely sincere. Not only is this album calculated, it also suffers from the same flaw that a great deal of LPs suffered from in the mid-90s-it's too long. Tracks such as "Suck On The Jugular," "Baby Break It Down," "Brand New Car," and "Mean Disposition" are not bad songs at all (they are all solid rockers), but there is simply no reason why the band could not have saved them for a rarities and b-sides compilation. Judge for yourself though.
Note that this is the band's first effort without bassist Bill Wyman. Voodoo Lounge and its massively successful supporting tour helped pave the way for other aging rockers, such as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, to reignite their careers in their '50s.
