Painting is a relaxing hobby that costs very little to start. To start watercolour painting, one of the most popular mediums to work in, all that's required is a watercolour pad, some paints, a couple of brushes and a little enthusiasm. Many people are put off from taking up a brush because of negative experiences they may have had at school or because they believe painting is something only top artists do and that you need to have some secret talent or gift to do it.
This is of course complete nonsense, one of those myths that hang around certain activities but are easily blown away with a little reasoning. Painting is a skill, simple as that. And like any skill it can be learned by patient practice and good instruction. I know it can seem intimidating when you look at the work of a skilled artist. It's easy to believe that you can never attain the same skill level. The problem here is that you are comparing yourself as a novice with someone who has achieved his or her skill level after years of practice.
Nobody can pick up a brush for the first time and paint the perfect picture, not even the great artists. We all have to start at the beginning. Everyone has to start with the basics and these can easily be learned and practiced by anyone. All it takes to become a good painter is practice and learning the techniques that the artists employ.
With watercolour for example there are certain techniques for creating different skies. Wet into wet techniques are used to create wonderful moody skies and this technique just requires a little practice to perfect. The beauty of this watercolour technique is that it's impossible to predict how the sky will look when the colours have merged into each other, and certainly impossible to replicate exactly. Even the best artists get it wrong and make mistakes.
Who knows how many paintings are thrown away because they failed. This is natural. When you are learning, don't be afraid to make mistakes. If something doesn't work, so what, move on. When the tree you've tried to paint doesn't look like a tree, it's ok. You've learned from the experience try again and if you fail again try again. With each attempt you have learned more, you have accumulated knowledge even if you are not aware of it.
One of the best ways to learn to paint if you can't get to a class is by using DVDs. There are some excellent painting instructional DVDs about and if you shop around you can find them at reasonable prices. I've learned many techniques from DVDs, in fact I think they're the best method of learning because you can replay the parts you are not sure about. The most important thing for novice painters to be aware of is that painting is just a skill. It follows certain set techniques and once these techniques have been learned you will be able to paint. Ignore all the nonsense about it requires a special gift. It doesn't. Just paint.
