In American history, why are the people from Netherlands called Dutch?
I don't understand that when they refer to the people of the New Netherlands colony in America, they call them Dutch. Aren't Dutch only from Germany???
And is Holland a seperate country from Germany?

Simple answer (yeah, right)
The Deutsch (Dutch) originated in the same area as the Germans (Deutschland) They moved into the lowland areas of Northern Europe at about the same time as the Anglo-Saxons moved onto the Island of Great Britain. (Notice that the country of the Anglos became known as Angland (England). Different languages developed out of the same mother tongue.
The language Deutsch is called German by the English. The language the Germans call Holländisch is called Dutch by the English. The country called the Netherlands by the English is called Holland by the Germans.
The Netherlands and Holland are the same country. In German the Dutch people (who live in Holland, remember?) are called Die holländischen Leute. The people who live in Holland call their own country the Netherlands in English.
And to make things even less clear - the Pennsylvanian Dutch are really German.
I think the confusion stems from the German word for themselves, the Deutsch.
I spent a long time trying to figure this out, too.
