What is the definition of Modern Rock/ Classic Rock/ Early Rock?
I'm doing a project about rock across the ages and i want to know what people think truly defines Modern Rock (90's+) Classic Rock (70's-80's) and early rock (50's-70's). and who some of the best bands of their time were.
Proto-Rock (need to update this)
Chuck Berry (basically defined the rock 'n roll sound; his influence can be heard in almost any form of rock music)
Elvis Presley (one of the first times rock reached a massive level of stardom)
"Classic" Rock (late 60's/early 70's)
The Beatles/The Rolling Stones/The Who/The Kinks - Basically the big four British pop groups that originated from the hugely influential Mob/Merseybeat scene; set the stage for a bunch of other rock/pop groups and defined the sound of a mass of other bands during the era
King Crimson/Yes/Can/Camel - Created Progressive Rock and its subgenres like Canterbury Scene and Krautrock
Pink Floyd/The Zombies/Love/Cream - Defined the "psychedelic rock" sound
Jimi Hendrix/Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath - Commercialized and defined the "heavy metal" sound
Frank Zappa/Captain Beefheart/Velvet Underground - Laid the groundwork for experimental/"indie" rock
Bob Dylan/Neil Young - Imported and commercialized folk elements into rock
Television/Joy Division/Talking Heads - Created "punk" rock
David Bowie/Brian Eno/Roxy Music - Glam rock; a genre of which I know little of; influenced tremendously by these guys
Modern Rock (80s-00s)
Metallica/Megadeth - made modern metal far more accessible, defining it in the process; I could go into a mass of detail
My Bloody Valentine/Slowdive/Cocteau Twins/Jesus and Mary Chain - Shoegaze and Dream Pop
Talk Talk/Slint/Godspeed You! Black Emperor - created the vague "post-rock"
Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Alice in Chains - defined "grunge"
Neutral Milk Hotel/Arcade Fire - recreated the "indie" sound
Minor Threat/Black Flag - laid the groundwork for hardcore punk
Converge/Blood Brothers/Botch - laid the groundwork for metalcore
Rites of Spring/Cap 'n Jazz - laid the groundwork for "emo", later commercialized by Brand New and the like
Radiohead - one of the first to commercialize the use of electronics as part of rock songwriting
