Chuck Schuldiner is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the Death Metal music style. With his aptly named band, Death, he released a number of ground breaking albums which have cemented his legacy. Beginning in 1983, Death struggled-through several member changes before releasing their first album, Scream Bloody Gore, in 1987. This album is considered by many as the first real 'Death Metal' album, and credited with creating a change in the direction of heavier Metal at the time. It features Schuldiner, as writer of all songs, playing Guitar, Bass Guitar as well as providing all Vocal tracks.
Death followed 'Scream Bloody Gore' by releasing 'Leprosy' in 1988 and 'Spiritual Healing' in 1990. These albums contain a very different tone of guitar and recording quality than Scream Bloody Gore, and move away from using heavy Grind/Punk influences to utilize a more Technical and Progressive sound. Being a perfectionist in his musical art, and after these two record releases, Schuldiner had bad luck maintaining full-time musicians to write with and resorted to simply hiring session musicians for recording as well as for live performances. This allowed Schuldiner to make all musical decisions, including song-writing, as well as tone, styles and development.
'Human', an album which was released in 1991 is considered to be another turning-point in Death's progression as well as the Death Metal genre. It is evident on this album that Schuldiner refined his guitar style and skill level had increased to allow him to be a lot more technical and accurate with his playing, this was also as a lack of having fulltime band members to influence his decisions.
The Death Metal style is an extreme style of Heavy Metal music. It features deep, growled or wraspy lyrics, very fast guitar picking, double kick bass drumming (known as 'blast-beats'), technical guitar riffs typically in a minor key with some atonality, super-fast guitar soloing using tapping, alternate picking and a lot of different squealing guitar techniques, using pinch harmonics and whammy-bars.
The act of 'Moshing' at Death Metal Concerts evolved and includes many variations, some of which are called 'The Wall of Death', which has concert-goers clearing a large empty area in the middle of the pit and then running at each other to try and smash through the crowd as the next song starts, 'Stage Diving' which involves people jumping off the stage into the Pit, and 'The Circle Pit' which involves fans charging around in a circle while swinging their arms and legs to get through anyone in their way! There have been cases of people moshing so aggressively that they have actually smashed their necks in the mosh pit and had to go to hospital. This is not something for the timid!
Continually wanting to get his music into new realms, Schuldiner ended the Death band/project in 1999 in order to begin a new group he named Control Denied. Unfortunately this new project as well as Death were put to their final end as Schuldiner died of cancer in 2001. Leaving the music is what maintains his legacy and keeps it living on, many Death Metal artists consider Schuldiner as one of their biggest influences. A few of Death's most well known songs are 'Pull the Plug', 'Crystal Mountain' and 'Lack of Comprehension'. These, along with many others have been played over and over by top Extreme artists.
