What Was The Best Era Of The Rolling Stones Career?
The Brian Jones era when they were a hit singles machine and in direct competiton with the Beatles?
The Mick Taylor era when they played the most smoking Bluesrock ever put to vinyl?
The Ron Wood era where they went through the Disco Funk and Reggae styles?
I'd like to know which era You prefer, and why?
Inspired by Jerry!
This is tricky ( oh, c'mon, don't Groan !! You know how I am
PREFACE --
First -- I really enjoy the "comparison" of Careers between The Stones & The Beatles !!
From everything that I have read -- It seems that in the 1960s, The Beatles would "punch" & The Stones would "counter-punch" - and on & on.
It's quite interesting comparing every year's UK releases against each other !!
NOW --
As much as you are asking for a Direct answer of Brian Jones, Mick Taylor, or Ron Wood...
I cannot answer this - with the exception that it is NOT the Ron Wood "era."
First -- the Brian Jones "era" -- covered more Variety of Styles of Music, than any other.
Some of those "styles" are my Favs -- but, some are NOT.
...and the Mick Taylor "era" was pretty consistently Great, EXCEPT --
I truly find that "Exile Main Street" is my Least Fav, between the Jones & Taylor "eras."
So, here is my Fav "era" in the ONLY way that I can answer.
"Let it Bleed" is smack in the middle of "My Fav Era" --
The UK versions of -- Between the Buttons (ironically, the Stones least fav release), Their Satanic Majesties Request, Let It Bleed, & Sticky Fingers.
So, that's 3 with Jones, only; 1 with Taylor, only; and 1 with "both."
So, my Fav Era of the Stones is 1967-1971.
THE REASON --
This period, seems to coincide with the type of Rock, that I like the most...
...a little "shuffle;" a little Sitar; a little Mandolin; a little pscyh; some Mellotron; flat-out, brilliant compositions and most of all -- "Rich, Heavy Guitar Riffs !!
THE RIFFS -- Mick Taylor, hands down.
As "nasty" and aggressive as "Satisfaction" must have sounded... "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" is the epitome of a Great Lick, imo
NOTE --
I still LOVE ALL of The Stones' Albums, before this (Aftermath is brilliant for its time!!) & Most of those after that.
I even have those as "late" as Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, & Bridges to Babylon !!
My Top 5 Stones Albums (from the Viewpoint of Posterity) --
1. Sticky Fingers
2. Aftermath
3. Some Girls
4. Let It Bleed
5. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll ( I think ""Time Waits for No One" is one of the most Intelligent Compositions, of ANY Genre, in Rock History)
Edit --
When I was young and "under the influence"... some guy at a party, said, "The reason the Stones are so great, is that they always seem to be playing music, that is "pertinent" to that particular time." (I'm sure he was referring to when the music was actually released).
To this day... THAT remains one of the "deepest" and probably most accurate comments, that I've heard.
Of course, at "the time"... I thought "Asparagus" was "deep"...
BUT, I DIGRESS !!....
