Cars: the inspiration behind everything from movies to music. Whether the car in question is a clapped out banger or an uber-cool super car, there is always something to get inspired about. Over the years there has been many a catchy tune about our love for the four-wheeled beauties so it's been an easy job to pick out 5 of the best. Here goes:

1. Cars - Gary Numan

This catchy electro-pop tune was a massive hit in the eighties and more recently (2002) was used as a sample by the Sugababes in their smash hit Freak Like Me. Rumour has it that Gary was inspired to create the song about feeling safe in the comfort of your car after he was involved in a road rage incident in London [1].

2. Mercedes Benz - Janis Joplin

Janis was a pioneer in the male dominated rock music era of the late 60's, with a voice that was somewhere between soulful blues and grainy rock. This ditty about materialism really hits home with its simplicity and it's difficult not to sing out loud to!

3. Driving in my Car - Madness

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who couldn't sing along to this song: "driving, driving in my - it's not quite a Jaguar!" The song was written about a Morris Minor years before the band became famous and endures to this day.

4. Greased Lightning - John Travolta

This classic tune from the film Grease has earned legendary status, as Danny aka Jon Travolta sings about trying to pick up girls in his suped up set of wheels. Cue lots of dancing, hair gelling and outrageous lyrics and you have one of the most memorable film moments ever.

5. Little Red Corvette - Prince

Taken from the massively successful album 1999, Little Red Corvette has plenty of innuendo in full-on Prince fashion. At the time it was Prince's most successful release, hitting number 6 in the Billboard Charts in 1982 [2].
