The Stabyhoun is a native of the Netherlands, and is recognized as a dog that can do it all, a fact that has made it an extremely popular breed for hunters and farmers alike since as early as 1800. One Stabyhoun owner said of the breed after years of using it as a gundog for hunting trips: "The Stabyhoun is a great dog as I can go out all day long, and it will stay by my side until it is required to do it's job; then this water loving dog will go and retrieve for me".
The gentle and loving animal also makes a great house pet that loves to play and cuddle and is very loyal to its family. It's medium build (19 to 21 inches tall and 40 to 55 pounds) along with its peaceful nature make it great with children of all ages and can act as a watchdog to warn of any impending danger. And while it is typically very calm while indoors, this dog much prefers to be outside and active and requires plenty of exercise (it's favourite pass time being playing fetch, including if it has to get in the water to find the tennis ball you just threw).
As loving, fun, and useful as the Stabyhoun is, it's also a fairly rare animal to find. Only 3500 exist in the entire world (10 in Canada, 155 in the United States, and the rest scattered in various places throughout the world but with most of them remaining in the Netherlands). Despite their rarity, Stabyhoun breeders in the Netherlands are known to sell the dogs for pretty cheap, seeing the breeding of the animal more as a labour of love than a business.
