Totally different experience - Completely different climates.
I've never been to Australia, but i'm definitely sure that it's a totally different world than Greece. I can only imagine that Australia has more big beaches and the landscapes are more wider than the friendliness of the Greek shores. Greek islands can offer you a far more options than visiting Melbourne or Sydney, due to the fact that you will be able to travel among different islands and experience lot more places in a small timeframe.
However Greece and Australia are totally different in many ways and you have to experience them both in order to decide which one "fits you better". There is no best place rather than the one that fits better in your character. Nevertheless, i believe that Greece objectively is more beautiful than Australia during summer, just cause of the plethora of Islands and natural beauty that has to offer. You have green mountains and forests on the one side and islands on the other. I can't imagine any other place in the world that can offer you the best of both worlds. Also in Athens, culturally you can have a far more better experience that visiting say Sydney. I wouldn't dare comparing Acropolis and it's new museum to the Sydney opera theatre. I respect them both, but Acropolis is incomparable for all the known reasons. Athens is also a modern city that can offer you all the nightclub pleasures, shopping, etc. that all major cities have.
You should also bare in mind that if you're travelling from within an EU country, you could spend as less as 50euros for your flight, while Australia might cost you a small fortune.
I'm lucky cause i was born in this beautiful country, but i definitely need to check Australia some time too..
