Guitar Man
Do you know of any naturally gifted or talented guitarists, the type of guitar hero who can pick up anything instantly by ear and make any guitar sing?
Legend has it that certain 'chosen' people are destined to become great guitarist whereas mere mortals must resign themselves to a life of musical mediocrity; we journey back through the mists of time to the land of 'smoke and mirrors' to discover the truth once and for all.
The story: You either have it or you don't... that's the story; that's how people explain how some players advance rapidly and others struggle forever never to achieve their musical goals.
Sad really, why is it that only a few players are 'naturally gifted' what makes them 'special?' Before you start feeling discouraged and strum your last chord on your favorite guitar before heading to the second hand shop to sell it... I want to tell you that the "You either have it or you don't" story is absolute rubbish!
Here's my story:
I was born at a young age into what was essentially a non-musical family, my mum did play the piano but judging by how out-of-tune our piano was it was obvious that her musical ear was not the ideal 'cutting edge, perfect pitch' type thing you hear about, rumor has it that ferrets and other such cuddly animals lived in our piano... all I know is we had a lot of fun singing around the piano on Saturday night!
By the age of seven I had been bitten by the 'guitar bug' I knew what I wanted to do with my life and set out to make my own instrument(s) after several disastrous attempts I produced something that vaguely resembled a guitar.
My formal guitar instruction began at the ripe old age of thirteen, I was indeed fortunate to learn from a real musician who could inspire as well as perspire the student, I learnt how to read music from my very first lesson, what a great start!
All was going well until... I had to take a music test at school, long story short a message was sent home to my parents to inform them that their son (me) managed to score the second lowest marks in the entire school for music; boy, was I glad the other guy was at school that day at least I didn't get the lowest marks!
Personally, I was devastated, this was a major blow for a guy who wanted to play music so badly to be told he had a 'tin ear' and that he didn't have a musical bone in his body.
After I recovered from the shock I set about proving them wrong; I had to, I wasn't good at anything else so I was a desperate man (boy).
My mission as to search out and find teachers and players who could and would help me I searched out the world's best players and teachers and made it my business to give them my full co- operation and to my amazement I found out the truth.
Here's what I learnt by studying with the best:
"Those who know how to do it - get it and those that don't know how to do it, never can do it!"
I know his is true, I have spent most of my life as a professional guitarist/musician, not bad for a guy who was 'tone deaf'.
It has nothing to do with natural ability... if you were to ask me about natural talent I would say that a person with 'natural talent' was the person who had the ability to work harder than anybody else.
Principles for life: Never ever give up on YOUR dreams, the easiest thing I could have done was give up on my dream to become a guitarist, however I wanted to play the guitar more than anything else in the world and thankfully being young and naive I followed my gut rather than the results of a music test.
There is always someone there to help you, but first you must believe in yourself, make sure you are clear on your target and put the full force of your will behind your desires and watch what happens.
I wish you every success playing the guitar.
