It natural for parents to want their children to grow into adults with a well rounded personality, who are interested in a variety of subjects, and who are inquisitive, with minds that are willing and eager to learn. A young persons attention span is notoriously short, and so the essential theories should be passed on in a way that is fun. It is much more likely to be retained if this is the case. If this is not achieved the chances are the topic will be branded as boring straightaway, and consigned to the dull department.
If the lessons can be varied, with a mixture of 90% fun and 10% essential info, the chances of the child remembering what is required for longer than an hour are maximised.
Social interaction skills can also be improved, by the simple fact that the child is conversing with an adult on a one to one basis regularly. This has the added benefit of increasing the child's communication skills.
Self confidence and esteem are also likely to improve, due to the fact that the child will be called upon to perform as soon as they are able.
A degree of adaptation may be required when it comes to planning a guitar lesson for a child or younger person.
Natural human development dictates that a child's hands may not be big enough to finger a whole chord across several strings.
This can be overcome to a degree by altering some of the most common chords fingerings, so as to allow the young student to progress without too much worry.
Fast results and real progress in a short time frame are essential for children. If a child can see progress quickly they are much more likely to continue to take an interest in the guitar and lessons.
When introducing any theoretical concepts, they should be developed in a very gradual manner so as to allow the student to fit the pieces together solidly.
Tunes that are taught should also be easy to learn but also sound good. These can be anything that the child is familiar with. I have had a good response from television theme tunes, nursery rhymes or even melodies from TV adverts.
To finish I will return again to the most important point of the whole article and one that teachers or mentors of young guitarists should always adhere to.
When teaching a child to play guitar, keep it simple, and keep it interesting.
