ADD/ADHD - Why are we medicating children on the advice of teachers without professional & ongoing psych care?
A child I know is being medicated for ADD. He was diagnosed by a teacher and prescribed the medicine by his pediatrician. He is 10. He has had some very rough years. His younger brother was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago. His parents were understandably consumed with his brother's illness. Although his brother is in remission and things seem to be back to "normal" it was a very traumatic experience for which he has had very little professional help and no ongoing care. He is depressed and has talked of suicide. The medication he is some heavy duty stuff. He doesn't seem like himself. For a while he was hoarding the pills and not taking them. It took days before anyone figured it out and evidently nobody noticed a difference in his behavior. All this is very alarming to me. I have talked to his mother repeatedly about how I feel and have done everything short of taking him to a physiatrist myself. He is a terrific kid and it breaks my heart.
Because people are mostly stupid.
