Most race tracks around the country are famous for the races that they host. Del Mar race track is famous for both the races that they host and for the individuals that are credited with creating the race track. Del Mar first opened on July 3, 1937 thanks to a celebrity partnership that included Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, Pat O'Brien and Charles S. Howard. When the race track opened, Bing Crosby was personally at the front gate to meet all of the fans. One of the first and most famous races held at Del Mar was a match race between Seabiscuit and Legaroti.
At this time, horseracing was a distant second when it came to sports, behind major league baseball; however, the match race between the two Thoroughbreds was highly publicized and became the first horserace to ever be broadcast nationwide on NBC radio. Seabiscuit won the race and helped to make the struggling Del Mar racetrack an overnight success. By the year of 1940, it was common to see a variety of different Hollywood stars socializing at the race track; however, the track closed between the years of 1942-1944 due to the Second World War.
In the year of 1946, the Santa Fe Railroad began to offer racetrack specials that would make it possible for horseracing fans to travel from Los Angeles to Del Mar to enjoy the races. This was also the year that the first Bing Crosby Handicap was held at Del Mar. Del Mar continued to prosper throughout the 1940s and 1950s and was quickly being called the Saratoga of the West when it came to summer horseracing. Since the summer racing was so popular at Del Mar, the track owners decided to sponsor a fall meet in the 1960s; however, the meet was cancelled because there was not much interest from the horsemen.
During the 1990s, Del Mar underwent major renovations, during which the grandstands were demolished and replaces. Del Mar also had a first in 1991 when it hosted its first million dollar purse stakes race, the Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes. In 2007, Del Mar underwent another renovation, this time to the racing surface. The dirt track was replaced with a new polytrack surface, which cost approximately nine million dollars. The first race on the new track surface was held on July 18, 2007 and was won by jockey Jon Court.
