Jimmy Castor Bunch
Born on April 16, 1955, Clive Campbell or popularly known as DJ Kool Herc, Kool Herc, and Kool DJ Herc, is a Jamaican-American musician regarded as the inventor of hip hop music.
Campbell was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the eldest among the six children of Keith and Nettie. While Campbell was growing up, he was exposed to hearing the sound systems used in his neighborhood's parties known as the dancehalls. In November 1967, he moved to Bronx, New York where he attended the Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School. In school, Campbell was called as "Hercules" because of his towering height, body frame, and attitude in the basketball court.
Campbell played various records such as "Give It Up Or Turn it A Loose" by James Brown, "It's Just Begun" by The Jimmy Castor Bunch and "Melting Pot" by Booker T & the MG on his first sound system - consisted of a guitar amplifier and two turntables.
He is also considered as the person who pioneered break-beat DIing, a process where the break in funk songs are isolated and prolonged in order to crate a "five minute loop of furry" that can be used for all-night dance parties. Campbell also contributed to the development of punctua, one form of hip hop rhyming style where slang phrases from the DJ's microphone can be heard such as "Rock on my mellow," "To the beat, y'all!," "B-boys, b-girls, are you ready?," and "This is the joint!." With Campbell's contributions to hip hop music, he is called by Time magazine as the "Founding Father of Hip Hop" and a "nascent cultural hero."
