Maybe Jones has realized that the Cowboys aren't his property, that they are bigger than him. Sure, he spent the money and collects the revenue, but there is history and simply the way people love their team to be considered. I'm sure that when a guy drops close to a billion dollars to buy a team that he thinks all of that other stuff is fluffy, meaningless crap, and that he really does own the team. Once he has been owner for a few years he realizes that his team is a whole lot more than a billion bucks--that it's something special to so many people, and that so many people contribute to the team's greatness, that he is simply a part of what makes up the Cowboys. And after having that realization, I can see him wanting to pay tribute to a coach who was a big part of that organization for so many great years.
Solo vader: the genius was only partially smart drafting. The true genius was trading away a team of solid aging veterans to get all of those draft choices. Few teams will decide to sacrifice a season or three to build a team of the future--that's the part that was genius. (And I'm a redskins fan who really hates acknowledging how great it was.)
