Joey Dee
Psalm 103 is one of those emotional prayers of David that mirrors to us the very struggles of a person who believes in the Lord. It teaches us, among other things that authentic faith is not exempted from experiencing adverse experiences and situations.
A Loving and Compassionate God. One of the most important lessons that we can learn from this prayer of King David is that we can be truly honest with God about our emotional struggles. We need to remember that our Lord is compassionate and He understands us fully and perfectly well.
As pointed out in Psalm 103, "The Lord is compassionate and gracious; slow to anger, abounding in love. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him, for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust."
A Merciful and Forgiving God. Allow me to illustrate this truth with the story of a boy named Joey. One summer, Joey and Jenny spent some time with their grandfather Joe in his farm. Their grandfather excitedly showed them around, and pointed out all his loved animals in the farm including, and most especially Daffy, his favourite pet duck.
One day, Joey decided to do something he has not yet tried before -slingshot target practice! He first began aiming at rocks and plants, but later on decided to try his new hobby on more exciting subjects. He then decided to try his slingshot with the various animals in the farm. He tried to shoot the chickens but missed. He tried to target the goats but missed as well. He then to aimed to shoot the cows but also missed! In utter frustration, he saw his grandpa's Ducky just sitting under the tree. He carefully aimed, focused his efforts and hit Daffy in the head so bad, that the duck died shortly.
Joey felt like a winning athlete only for a short while. He then realized he had killed his Grandpa's favourite duck. He resolved to keep the matter to himself. But to his dismay, his sister Jenny was there and she saw everything that he did. That night after the dinner, Jenny was tasked by Grandpa to wash the dishes. To Joey's surprise, she told him, "Joey will be very happy to wash the dishes for me". And before Joey could utter a word of protest, she reminded him whispering, "...Remember Daffy the duck..! This went on for some time. Jenny would take advantage of what she knew to harass and even enslave Joey and each time he would complain, she would say those magic words, "...Remember Daffy the duck". It came to point when Joey could not take the harassment Jenny was subjecting him to just because of what he had done. He resolved to finally tell the truth to his Grandpa Joe. That night, Joey mustered all of his strength and confessed everything. To his surprise, his Grandpa Joe was not at all shocked with his revelation. He was not angry with him either. Then he grinned and told Joey, "Actually, when you hit Daffy, I was there looking from the window. I witnessed what you did firsthand. I have been waiting for you to come and to tell me. For when you do as you are doing right now, I will forgive. In fact, I have already forgiven you."
Just like Joey, we have absolutely nothing to hide from God. He is loving and quick to forgive. Let us unload our burdens and be freed from the heaviness of what we tend to conceal. God is omniscient. It is futile to try to keep something from God as if He does not have any idea about it yet. We can have more peace and joy in our hearts when we regularly open up and confess our deepest thoughts and deeds to God. He forgives and restores our soul.
