On the way to Joplin is a beautiful little place called Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, MO. This is a wonderful place to visit. It is a peaceful garden and a place to get connected to the spiritual world. It is a ministry of art from Samuel J. Butcher.
Samuel J Butcher started drawing the teardrop-eye children in 1974 for his friends and family. It has gone on to be a worldwide recognizable art. He has built a beautiful chapel and garden with the most complete collection of gifts.
There is a museum, a chapel and a gift shop and snack shop. They have tours of the chapel and it tells of the artwork that he made. You will most likely spend several hours here.
Then on we go to Joplin. Joplin has many things to do and see. Start at the Joplin Museum Complex. Joplin started as a zinc and lead mining town, and tools of the trade are on display as well as other items of the trade. The Mineral Museum sits in a reproduced mineshaft. The museum is in Shifferdecker Park and is open Tuesday through Sunday.
Children will like "The Bridge" and entertainment center. It is home to a 40' rock climbing gym, arcade gaming and cage basketball. They also have Internet cafe and wireless hotspot. The bridge has something for everyone. Open Tuesday through Sunday with free admission.
Grand Falls on Shoal Creek is just a few minutes away and is a popular place when it its hot out. It is a natural flowing waterfall that falls over 25' on solid chert. They swim and fish here. The city has two large public swimming pools and an aquatic center.
Wildcat Glades and Audubon center is an interesting place to visit. When first looking at the center it looks abandoned. There is grass growing on the roof, tall grasses out in front, and the drive is gravel instead of pavement. But it is all for good reason. The parking lot is made up of plastic grid/sand/gravel and filters all liquids leaked from cars. Water is allowed to normally seep back into the ground. The rain run off from the roof goes into a cistern in front that is used to water the grass and plants in the landscaping and gardens. The center is open year-round Tuesday through Saturday, 9 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4. No admission charge. There is three miles of trails to walk or bicycle.
There is so much more to do in Joplin, shopping and camping and float trips, and more shopping. Stop in and say hello to Joplin. Scattered all around the city are many different restaurants and motels. Camp grounds are near by but not in the city.
