In the waiting room: Vampire Weekend @ Amoeba Hollywood

I went to Amoeba on Monday evening to see Vampire Weekend but only made it as far as the elevator lobby/entry way (just above the downstairs parking lot). I stood there for like an hour and went through every flier in those racks. All I got was a free Dead Meadow poster (whose new record came out yesterday) and a bunch of rave fliers that seemed real cool at the time. They're on the floor in my car now. I may not have seen the show, but I did hear a little bit of it, and now I understand why my friend would refer to Vampire Weekend as "like, 5th wave ska." Here's what I, and probably you, missed:

Amoeba In-Store: Vampire Weekend, Monday February 4th

Amoeba's just full of 'em lately. In the past couple months we've seen Band of Horses, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Kate Nash, Sia, and now Vampire Weekend. I think it's a pretty dumb name for a band because it doesn't make any sense (but I guess there are other things that I'm into that don't make any sense, like that Gossip Girl show, but whatever that's not what this is about). Anyway, yea, there's something not normal about their music. Rolling Stone'll tell you it's cause they've got "a suave sound that incorporates ska, New Wave and Afro-pop", a combination of genres that makes even less sense in my mind than Puffy and Sting, but I'll have to agree with Pitchfork when they simply state, "Vampire Weekend come along like Belle & Sebastian and the Strokes each did, sounding refreshingly laidback and uncomplicated, and with simple set-ups that make good songs sound exceedingly easy. (The result being not "this is mind-blowing," or "this is catchy," but "I have listened to this, straight through, four times a day for the past month".)"

Let them eat Cake: Kate Nash @ Amoeba

Everyone's been comparing this little piece of hotness to the likes of Lily Allen or Lethal Bizzle. I just think I like her more than chocolate cake?
(Yeah man, I don't know where I was going with that one either. I kinda just accept it.)

Lady Kate Nash performed a free show last night at Amoeba only hours before her sold out debut at the Troubadour. I posted about this earlier last week but for some reason the blog never showed up. I don't know why. Quite frankly, one of my New Year's resolutions was to rekindle my bitter relationship with blogger... and quite frankly, I don't know how well it's working. Maybe I should go eat worms.

Dude, home videos are rough... Click below to observe. God bless camera phones.

Nash's 'Foundations' was the 17th highest-selling single in the U.K. in 2007, released on Fiction Records (home of Elbow) in July of same year. Rock on sista.

Kate Nash : Free show @ AMOEBA

Hey kiddies, we love free shows, do we not? Lady Kate Nash is a-comin' to town. Check 1, Check 2...

People are comparing this little vixen to the likes of Lily Allen, only less, achem, crass. Nash will be performing live at Amoeba on Monday, January 14th @ 6:30 p.m. If you weren't quick enough to score tickets to her sold out Troubadour show later the same evening, go here instead. But don't be surprised if you see a bunch of 14 year olds with side ponytails, faking British accents.

Ahoy matie.

This ain't no Switchblade, Sharon Jones

Being in a hurry really doesn't mix well with the Wilshire/Western Redline connection, especially on lack of sleep. If they did, many of us would get to work on time more often Monday morning, and I would have gotten to see Sharon Jones & Dap Kings at Amoeba without stepping on and kicking people to get out of way because I was ten minutes late.

... It never ceases to amaze me how these Amoeba shows actually start on time.

At precisely 7 p.m., the Dap Kings began to romp about on stage for a couple of lonesome bars before Jones eventually moseyed out to the roaring crowd and belted out the opening song, "How Do I Let a Good Man Down?"

During "Be Easy" Jones invited on stage with her an unidentified male fan in a sweater and tie.

The Brooklyn songstress' forty minute set also included songs "100 Days, 100 Nights," and "Nobody's Baby" and a funky soul cover of "This Land is Your Land."

Unidentified male fan in a sweater and tie on stage, if you're reading this: I think there may have been a banana in your pocket.
