Dear Portishead: I'm Sorry I Downloaded The New Album So Early

portishead thirdI was so overly excited to hear the new Portishead record, Third, which is scheduled for release on April 29th in the US, that I jumped the gun and figured out how to download the whole thing for free. Two weeks ago. I kinda feel like I ruined Christmas or something. BUT I JUST COULDN'T WAIT. And you know what? I wish I had, because I totally spoiled the surprise and made the entire thing utterly anti-climactic. I didn't get the chance to get stoked when the band made the first single off the album, Machine Gun, available for purchase/download through their website last night, and I didn't even bother to take a gander at the video until just now AND IT IS SO GOOD! Maybe the actual video isn't too amazing, but god damn this song is good. I've listened to the album several times but not until watching this video did ANY of it It make me feel like I was listening to Portishead in 10th grade again. Which is something stupidly sentimental and I won't even pretend that I can actually make any of you understand what I mean. (but does anyone know where the sample at the end of 'Western Eyes' comes from?)

Anyway, they're being real top-secret about all this, so go to the website and sign up so you can watch the video, buy the song, and and swoon over it all for yourself.

NEW PORTISHEAD SONGS: 3 Tracks/1 Video from ATP 2007

So we weren't lying before, guys. Portishead really does have new stuff, and I'm totally stoked that I'm still on the URB mailing list, otherwise I wouldn't be able to throw it at you guys. That's right--see, my internet is down, like I've mentioned 20 times before, but for some reason I decided to check my email at the internet cafe (this post is costing me like 5 bucks) and found this GEM in my inbox.

To click or not to click? Well, here's the rundown on what you'll find there:

3 live Portishead tracks from All Tomorrow's Parties last weekend
1 live video
and some wholly unuseful comments following each.

And um...what do we have here?

3 NEW live Portishead tracks:
1 NEW live video from ATP 2007

No stupid comments.
SWEET DEAL, BRO.

NEW PORTISHEAD ALBUM a day from completion (on twistedear.com)

Question of the day: What was the release date of Portishead's last studio-recorded album?

The correct answer is 1997, which, for those of you who are numerically challenged, WAS A FREAKING DECADE AGO. Well, good news, guys. The 10-year dry spell is soon to end. UK based music journal twistedear.com posts,

"Portishead's regular blogger, and founder, Geoff Barrow has posted an update on the third album progress: apparently it's on day from being finished, which given the time delay in the news being leaked, could well mean it's finished NOW!"

Subsidiary question of the day: Was anyone else completely in the dark about this?
