Today, Betta fish are becoming increasingly popular as pets all across the world. There is lot to know about caring for Betta fish, but with the right guidance it really isn't all that difficult. This article should serve as a sort of mini guide, with 2 lengthy tips for giving you the best Betta experience possible. These tips surround the two issues that I feel are most often misrepresented, thus leading Betta owners to mistakes that can prove deadly for their fish.
Know How to Feed Properly: With so many opinions out there on what to do, and unfortunate number of Betta fish die each year due to overfeeding. First of all you have to choose a food; there are several options. In one category we have live foods, these include brine worms and blood worms. Betta fish love live foods, unfortunately most of these are high in protein and fat, but low in other nutrients essential to a healthy diet.
So what other options do you have? As for is specifically formulated to meet your pet's diet requirements, you have flake food and pellet food. Nutritionally, they are the same. But I prefer pellet food because all of the pellets are roughly the same size and so measuring out a meal is easy. Flakes very in size and so the amount of food you're feeding your Betta from meal to meal can fluctuate greatly. If you do go with pellets two in the morning and two at night is an ideal feeding schedule. A Betta fish's stomach is only as big as its eyeball, so if you can't remember if you've fed your fish or not, it's best to be on the safe side and just wait until the next feeding time... they can go a long time without food, so your pet won't starve.
Water Conditions: When it comes to water conditions, caring for Betta fish can get a little bit tricky. Make sure your water comes from the tap that you use de-chlorination drops to ensure that hard minerals are removed or neutralized.
When it comes to water changes, you don't want to be too drastic. The quality of your water relies heavily on the beneficial bacteria that grow in it. So while you want to keep the water clean, you do not want to remove large colonies of this bacteria at a time, they need to be able to regrow. I prefer to do 10 to 20% water changes every few days and keep up a consistent schedule. Doing this and using a filter with a bio-bag will help maintain healthy levels of bacteria in your tank.
Caring for Betta fish can be an exceptionally rewarding experience. However, getting a hold of the right information can be quite an ordeal, and due to the nature the species learning how to take care of a Betta fish the wrong way can quickly result in a dying pet.
