Looking Glass
It's been interesting seeing the many different incantations of Lewis Carroll's classic story Alice Through The Looking Glass. In my lifetime there have been at least five film adaptations of the story, all of which try to give it a different spin and all of which I have enjoyed on some level.
The classic Disney film Alice In Wonderland started the trend and translated what was originally meant to be a very dark and adult story into a kid-friendly romp - complete with colorful characters and musical numbers. I remember this version seeming bizarre to me as a child but went along with it and enjoyed it for what it was.It later became a popular project for various TV networks, resulting in two distinct mini-series that were released at various points throughout the '90s.
The first was a bizarre mix of Carrol's original vision and kid-friendly antics, resulting in a slightly amusing yet slightly terrifying final product. I would be shocked to find anyone who was not slightly traumatized by the first shot of the Jabberwocky as it cowers over a helpless Alice. The later version, starring Veronica Mars and Big Love star Tina Majorino, was geared towards a family audience and removed many of the darker themes.
Over a decade later, Alice is once again a hot commodity. The SyFy channel recently adapted the story into modern times with their mini-series Alice, which recast the heroine as a blogger in the 21st century. The series received mixed reviews but gained popularity due to an even bigger project released at the same time. That project was Alice In Wonderland, Tim Burton's 're-imagining' of the classic tale that was released worldwide in March 2010.
Although billed as a straight adaptation, Burton's film is actually a sequel of sorts - following Alice as she returns to Wonderland many years later. Burton and the story seem like a perfect mix given his dark sensibilities as a director, but the fact that the film is produced by Walt Disney Pictures and geared towards a family audience limits its potential. Thus, the film comes off as disjoined - with many frightening scenes intercut with scenes of madcap slapstick. The visual style is there but Burton seems to be afraid to push boundaries, which is surprising given his previous projects. Nonetheless, the film went on to gross over $1 billion worldwide and remains the most successful film of 2010.
Alice is indeed a hot commodity and viewers have embraced the story, but it seems unlikely that there will ever be a 'true' adaptation of Carroll's original fable.
