When I heard Kareem Abdul Jabbar describe Bruce Lee's school of martial arts Jeet Kune Do as eclectic and American, rather than Chinese or Asian, because it borrowed pieces from many disparate traditions to create something brand new, I couldn't help but think of the origins of mid to late 1960s rock music.
As a rock fan and -- for a short period -- hopeful rock musician around 1966 and 1967, I read the main magazine at that point -- Hit Parader.
I don't know whether Rolling Stone was around at that point. I guess Hit Parader was a commercial outgrowth of the mainstream press just catering to teenage fans. Still, it published a lot of interesting material.
I read interviews with musicians from The Doors, Jefferson Airplane and many more I can't remember.
I don't recall any of the interviews individually, but I can't forget how they merged into one similar whole.
Whether they began playing because pressured by parents or on their own, they shared an affinity for many different kinds of music.
They all listened to as much rock and roll as possible, of course. Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Lil Richard, Chuck Berry, Ritchie Valens, and the others. That was a given.
They often described listening to the radio late at night (young people today may not realize that AM radio waves travel farther at night, so after sunset, using a non-digital tuner, you can catch stations you cannot listen to during the day), catching black-oriented stations playing rhythm and blues that rocked like they'd never heard. Or, on Saturday night, they listened to The Grand Ole Opry out of Nashville Tennessee.
Some of them grew up immersed in playing classical music. Others played or heard gospel (black or white) in church on Sunday. Others listened to jazz, fascinated by how Charlie Parker played the saxophone.
And of course most all of them had a folk background. And many had listened to the country and urban blues -- from Bukka White to BB King. Not to mention Howling Wolf.
Not all of them listened to everything, but all of them listened to many different things.
The rock music of that era was created by serious musicians who, whatever you may think of them, were heavily influenced not only by rock and roll, but also by a wide range of American music from Hank Williams to Joan Baez.
And when the interviewer got around to asking what they were doing now (besides whatever album they were recording or concert tour they were on), they'd mention they were listening to music from Morocco. Or Japan. Or Brazil.
George Harrison studying the sitar under Ravi Shankar and Eric Clapton covering the Bob Marley and the Wailers' song Who Shot the Sheriff (thus bringing reggae into popular awareness outside of Jamaica) are two prominent examples of how musicians of that era were influenced by nonmainstream music genres -- but far from the only ones.
