Martha Argerich
Fazioli Pianos are considered by many to be one of the most sought after makes of piano, alongside those of Steinway & Sons. They are an Italian brand, producing just over 100 pieces from one factory based only in Italy. Named after Paolo Fazioli, the company is relatively new only producing pianos since the late 1970's/early 1980's.
Arguably, what appears to have assisted with the creation of their high reputation is the very own musical talent of the company's instigator. After studying engineering at the University of Rome, the intention was to enter the family business in furniture manufacturing. However with not only his interest in and his musical talent, his interest in musical engineering and manufacture may have played an important part in his career direction.
Paolo Fazioli has always had an almost perfectionist view regarding the production of musical instruments. It is understood that Fazioli always aims to product grand and concert grand pianos on an exclusive basis, to create unique and individual sounds and timbres, to hand craft each piano with latest technological expertise and to always strive to improve the piano with the use of technology.
Fazioli has always concentrated on the production of sound that the piano makes. His knowledge and research of acoustics are integral with Fazioli Pianos which help to produce the sounds of Fazioli Pianos. Now known as being one of the most expensive pianos to buy due to the materials used to create them, Fazioli Pianos are hand crafted and never mass produced. The wood used to make a Fazioli Piano comes locally from the Val di Fiemme region of Italy, the same area where the wood for Stradivarius violins come from. The costs of a Fazioli Piano start at $75,000 and can increase to up to $500,000. In comparison, a Steinway grand piano starts at around $50,000.
For many people, this amount of money may appear ridiculous to spend on a piano. However, if you have the money, then why not. People who purchase a Fazioli Piano say that there is literally nothing to compare its sound and playing ability to. Professional pianists from all genres are lucky to use Fazioli Pianos. Artists who have played recitals on Faziloi Pianos include Aldo Ciccolini, Alfred Brendel, Martha Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lazar Bermann, Nikita Magaloff, Michel Berof, Annie Fischer, François Joel Thiollier, Murray Perahia, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Barron to name a few.
Currently offering six different models of grand piano, the largest is the F308. The F308 has 4 pedals, as opposed to many having 3, which when pressed brings the hammers nearer to the piano strings which decreases the volume when played but keeping the same tone and timbre heard. No other piano manufacturer offers a fourth pedal.
With the quality of wood being used to manufacture a piano, with a limited chance of purchasing a piano of such quality materials, plus the extensive acoustic research the Fazioli Pianos boasts, there is little wonder why Fazioli Pianos are the most expensive pianos to buy.
