How does it shave?
As close or closer than any modern razor. Most wet shavers believe the double edge razor offers a much closer shave than the cartridge type razors. Yes, you have to get used to using a classic razor. It isn't as forgiving as a modern razor, but once you get the hang of it, the old double edge razor really shines. It can handle thick beards with aplomb, cuts through three days of growth without a hitch.
Which one should I get?
There are two types of double edge razors: adjustable and non-adjustable. The adjustables allow you to tweak the blade angle: shallow for a more forgiving shave where the blade is close to the guard; and a more aggressive angle exposes more blade which cuts through thick beards, but also increases the chance of a nice. More advanced wet shavers go for the aggressive settings, while newbies should stick to a shallower blade angle initially.
If you are just starting out, pick up one of the Merkur or Parker safety razors in the $25 range and give it a try. Once you see the light and get hooked, then you can branch out and consider the slightly more expensive razors from Merkur.
