You can find plenty of information about rapport building techniques online but the easiest way to develop rapport with someone is by having some background knowledge of them. Here's where you need to become a spy and start doing your research before you go on your interview. You probably already know something about the company your seeking employment with but you need to go deeper. Run a Google search on your potential new boss. Find out everything you can about them. Read their Bio. check to see if they are on LinkedIn or some other industry related networking site. They may even have a MySpace page, you never know until you look. I'm not saying you need to become a stalker but it's imperative that you know as much as you can about them. What school did they go to, what awards have they won, how long have they been with the company?
OK... So now you have all this information about your potential employer. What do you do with it?
o Start preparing for your interview by making a list of answers for both standard and difficult questions (e.g. I would like to work for your company because my research revealed that you place a great deal of importance on customer service.) This shows that you cared enough to find out something about the company and that you invested some of your own time.
o Make a list of common interests that you have with your interviewer or potential boss. Once you have established some rapport you can start throwing these mutual interests in to strengthen and bolster your rapport (e.g. In my spare time I like to mountain bike.) Be careful not to talk about your outside interests without getting permission first. This usually comes in the form of a question from the interviewer like "what do you like to do in your spare time?"
o Even the most hardened interviewer welcomes the opportunity to talk about themselves. Give them the opportunity by asking them a leading question based on your research (e.g. I understand that you won the platinum club award last year?) Then lean in and demonstrate that you are a good listener. Let them go on about themselves. They won't know why but after you leave they'll probably remember you as the candidate that they liked.
Like any good spy you need to be prepared. After you have completed your investigation you need to do some role playing. Have a friend, sibling or spouse play the role of your interviewer. Give them some background about the part they are playing and have them ask you a list questions. You can find common interview questions online but you should make your own list based on what you know about the company and potential boss. Practice using your answer list, common interest list, and ask leading questions.
