The economy of World of Warcraft revolves around the gold currency. Selling items to NPC's or auctioning it off in the auction house gives you a tidy sum to buy better equipment for your toons. You need to know how to work the auction house in order to maximize your profits. Remember the item that may seem like trash to you maybe some other classes sought after treasures.
Equipment is one of the most sought after and expensive items in the World of Warcraft auction houses. When leveling or farming, you will come across several items that are more rare than others. Purple and blue items are the better and more sought after items in the auction house. These usually are dropped from rare spawns or boss NPC's or made by crafters. Selling it in the auction house will be more profitable than selling it to an NPC. Green items are the next most sought after items. Some may not sell well in the auction house so its better to sell them to the NPC for better profit to free up your precious bag slots. Always check the auction house first before selling green and blue colored items to the NPC.
Do not be too greedy when selling Your items at Auction. If you keep and keep your items in your bank or bag slots, you won't have space anymore to obtain new items. Sometimes it is better to undercut other sellers especially if the item is fast moving and if you can have a steady supply of the item to sell to the auction house. Always remember if your item does not sell then you already suffered a loss from your posting fee.
Sometimes in rare cases you may buyout a certain item that you see is fast moving. Usually during the weekends or holidays when server population is high, demand for certain items is high. These weekend warriors will pay for the items they want as it is the only time they can log in and play. So if you see these items moving fast, buy the cheaper ones posted and then sell them high. Its a very risky tactic but pays well if you happen to catch the right item. At the end of the day, it's all about buying low, and selling high, and included in "buying low" is going out and getting the items yourself, because you can't get them any cheaper than that.
