To paraphrase Nick Cave - "Music has the ability to change your emotional wellbeing and chemical structure......all within 3 minutes." Whether listening or playing, music has an impact on the person involved. In recent years we have seen music being formally used in the therapeutic process to initiate healing as well as comforting those with terminal illnesses. From the womb to the tomb and everything in-between, music has the power to touch children with disabilities, adolescents, people in midlife and those in later life.
Quite often music becomes a natural accompaniment in times of change or crises whereby people can find genuine relatedness and understanding in what a particular artist is expressing. Tastes in music change as people grow and a style of music that has captured the hearts of many due to its down-to-earth nature and heart-felt lyrics is the "Blues"
Many people can instantly recognise a Blues song due to its simple structure and the emotion with which it is sung. Blues as therapy still holds true today as it did when the African-American people were expressing their hardships, lost loves, joy and pain 60-70 years ago. Culture and society has changed since then but emotions are here to stay and there will always be a strong pull to hear music that expresses what is going on inside. Singing the Blues is a great way to communicate inner unrest.
From a musician's point of view, the Blues can be a great source of creativity and therefore assist in the wellbeing of the artist. The Blues leaves room for improvisation and much joy can be gained from allowing the musician to push the boundaries of their ability - something which the listener can also appreciate. Lyrically the musician is free to draw on personal experiences and everyday situations that have impacted on them and in doing so allowing others to relate to what is a very personal outlook.
It is not surprising that music has been formally recognised as a means to healing and growth - Really it's been going on for centuries and will continue in one form or another. As long as there is human emotion, there will be a need to express it.
