1365 - King Edward III of England banned football because of its excessive violence and because the time spent playing football took away from archery practice - archery being necessary for the defence of the realm. Edward II had already banned it in London in 1314 with the proclamation "For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over great balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such a game to be used in the city.". Later Henry IV and Henry VIII passed laws against football and Queen Elizabeth I "Had soccer players jailed for a week, with follow-up church penance".
1667 - The low point in English naval history. The Dutch fleet under Admiral de Ruyter burned Sheerness, sailed up the River Medway, raided Chatham dockyard and escaped with the royal barge, the "Royall Charles". It was said that the King, Charles II, was dallying with one of his mistresses at the time - he had a number, as well as 14 illegitimate children.
1897 - Karl Elsener of Switzerland patented "a useful pocket tool" which later became known as the Swiss Army Knife. After serving an apprenticeship as a cutler in Germany, Elsener returned to Switzerland in 1884 and opened his own business in Ibach near Schwyz. In 1891 he produced a wooden handled knife with a newly designed spring mechanism that allowed other utensils to fold alongside the blade. The knife was for the Swiss army which, up until then, had been importing knives from the German cutlery town of Solingen. Later Elsener designed a civilian version which had a red handle so that it could easily be seen in snow.
1964 - Nelson Mandela was jailed for life for sabotage. This was the 2nd time that he had been tried for high treason - in 1956 he was charged but, after a four year trial, the case was dropped. He was released in 1990, having served 27 years behind bars. In 1993 he was jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize and elected President of South Africa in 1994.
2000 -A construction worker at a police station in Downey, California, found a wallet in the men's room that had been stolen in 1957. The wallet, wedged between a cast-iron sink and a wall, was in good condition and contained the female owner's driver's license, Social Security card, photos of children and a check for $107. Police had only moved into the building a couple of years before.
