Do I still have a chance to significantly raise my GPA and class rank?
Hi I am a high school sophmore. I have great Extracurriculars/ activities and I got a SAT I score of 2250 recently. Now I am focusing on improving my class rank and GPA. Junior Year I can only take up to 4 APs, and senior year around 7 or 8 and right now I am taking 1.
Sophomore grades are pretty average right now
Here they are:
Alg Trig Honors: 89
Spanish Honors 99
Chem Honors 94
AP bio 90
English honors: 97
Orch: 100
Gym: 97
I believe I can do much better, and I believe I can go a long way If I work even harder. In my grade there are students with a higher Math, Chem, and AP bio average, so I believe I am behind.
I going to take two extra summer courses to raise my GPA. If I raise my averages in all my courses junior year, will my class rank and GPA significantly increase? I really want to got to Columbia U or UCB, if not U of R., UCSB, RIT, UC IRvine...
Please tell me, do you think I have a chance of significantly increasing my rank and GPA Junior year?
First off, do *not* worry about sophomore year ranks. Those change substantially: I was #7 in sophomore year, but in May, I'll be graduating #1. My sister, who also graduated #1 four years ago, was #20 or so at the end of sophomore year.
So to answer your question: yes, your rank can/will improve. You have two whole years to make it happen. It does, however, depend on the other people in your class--e.g. if there's some random genius who's already in multivariable calculus--but you can't do much about that. So long as you try your hardest, improve your grades, take rigorous classes, keep up with your extracurricular activities, and have good recommendations, you have a decent shot at Columbia.
Since you live in New York, though, the competition will be tougher, and you'll want the best application you can have. If you can only take 4 AP classes as a junior, I would recommend self-studying a few AP courses, or even enrolling in on-line classes. Self-studying means not taking a class for the AP exam, but buying a textbook or prep books, etc. and taking the AP exam anyways.
I want to say, though, that sometimes academics aren't the best way to go. If you do amazing in your extracurriculars (e.g. national awards) but have good grades (not necessarily amazing), you can still get into Columbia. One of my friends was accepted to Yale last year, and I'm pretty sure her class rank was in the 30's.
