In the 1986 classic movie "Peggy Sue got Married," a then young Peggy Sue asked her grandfather if he would do anything differently regarding the life he lived. His only answer was along the lines of "I'd take better care of my teeth." The importance of practicing good oral hygiene cannot be stressed enough regarding preventative dental care.

There are plenty of reasons why:
- Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the bone density of aging Americans. Hormonal fluctuations are one of the culprits behind the bone-weakening plight. When the situation is in effect, teeth that were once strongly anchored into your jawbone will lose their connectivity. Tooth loss is not uncommon.
- Diseases: Seniors are already at greater risk of getting such ailments as heart disease, oral cancer, diabetes and stroke. Bad oral hygiene may exasperate the problem or increase the odds of contracting such an illness.
It is often the feistiest of seniors that suffer the most. Reuters Health reported the findings of a recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health. The research indicated that "seniors who live alone or with one of their adult children are much less likely to receive preventative healthcare and dental care services than those who reside with their spouse." One reason why could be linked to the costs associated with dental exams and treatments.
Many of problems such as gum disease can be easily avoided by seniors who follow a smart dental hygiene program on a daily bristles. Seniors need to choose a soft, bristled toothbrush to gently brush their teeth and remove plaque from the gum line. Aside from brushing twice a day, aging Americans need to properly floss their teeth on a daily basis to ensure they get the cleanest mouths possible
Preventative tooth care such as brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent expensive trips to the dentist later. Replacing missing teeth with dentures or implants can be extremely expensive and time consuming. Although some of the costs can be reduced by utilizing the discount dental care feature associated with affordable dental plans, and ounce of prevention is significantly cheaper than any amount of cure!
