Most people who suffer from OCD often use the intensity of the anxiety they feel whenever a ritual is left undone as a reason why they cannot discern between a normal and an OCD induced behavior. However, recent studies and researches on OCD have found out that most sufferers who have accepted and conceded by faith that they have OCD have been able to resist performing their OCD rituals. Acknowledgment of the disorder serves as a very strong guideline for sufferers to realize that they have the ability to resist their disorder. This is the foundation of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for OCD.
The goal of Cognitive-behavioral Therapy is to encourage sufferers to make the choice to "risk" feeling disturbed for not doing an OCD ritual rather than do the ritual itself. CBT makes the preference easy for the patient by proving that the risks are only contained inside their minds. This re-assures the sufferers that no genuine risk actually exists regardless if they refuse to do the OCD ritual.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy works by allowing suffers to think about the questions that play inside their heads, i.e. "Will I be endangered if I don't wash my hand at least 50 times a day?" or "Will I not be able to sleep if I do not arrange my plates in accordance to size, shape, color and age?". The therapy allows sufferers to answer their own questions and accept the risks that will happen if they refuse to do the OCD ritual.
Through CBT therapy, a sufferer is convince to take the risk of the "danger" happening rather than doing the OCD ritual, but with the assurance that the therapist or love ones will be there right beside them in case the "danger" does happen. The end goal of the therapy is to make sufferers deal with the "real thing" which only they can perceive and in the end, realize that the "danger" is actually not existent.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy has two primary applications: first, in helping people the overall mental mechanism of his disorder and second, to facilitate the process of getting over the mental mechanism. In the context of OCD, the first application covers the awareness of an OCD sufferer about his condition and how it manifests in his or her specific situation. The second application refers to the use of cognitive principles which help the sufferer to have healthier disposition towards his or her mental condition. These two main applications are vital to the progress of the OCD treatment.
In general, this type of OCD therapy provides sufferers with the appropriate responses to certain urges to do OCD rituals. The therapy also educates sufferers with the nature of their disorder thus helping them delineate between their real human nature or character and the behaviors that are only products of their disorder. Although the immediate goal of Cognitive-behavioral therapy is not to "cure" OCD, it is specifically designed to target the gradual lessening of the frequency of the ritual cycle until such a time that the sufferer is able to completely stop doing such.
