Let's face it, if you know anything about guitars or even at least know that a guitar is a musical instrument, chances are you've heard of the Gibson Les Paul Custom. But the Custom Les Paul is by no means a mere guitar. It is an entity that has rocked stages all over the world in the hands of some of the most talented and prolific musical artists of our time. Legendary guitarists known for both their antagonizing riffs as well as their silk-lined solos have accepted the guitar as an extension of the passion they put into each and every note. When a guitarist puts his faith in an instrument a promise is made that the Les Paul will never break.
Why a Les Paul?
What is a question best left to those who know. Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Billie Joe Armstrong, Sammy Hagar, Ace Frehley, Pete Townshend, this is just a small collection of names who would swear by the Gibson Custom. Where Can I Find One?!
Contrary to what you may believe, grasping one of these guitars in your hands and calling it your own does not require you pull the instrument from a mythical stone and be hailed as the chosen one as lightning streaks across the sky in a rock and roll moment for the ages. These epic guitars can actually be yours the old fashioned way. That's right. You can buy one. Purchasing a Les Paul can either be the greatest or worst decision of your life depending on the level of respect you have for a name the not only guarantees quality, it actually sings it. Purchasing your guitar online and directly from Gibson is the safest bet if your chief concern is that your Les Paul comes to you in tip-top condition. The downside of this is that you would never actually be able to get your mitts on the guitar until it actually showed up at your door. The relationship between a guitarist and his guitar is an intimate one, and some would view buying your Gibson online the same as marrying someone you had never met before. There are many outlet dealers online offering Les Paul's for a fraction of their regular cost. Veiled behind this too good to be true price tag is almost always a defect with the instrument that caused Gibson to deem it too low for their high quality standards. Sure, it could be a small chip in the wood on your guitar's body that affects almost nothing about the instrument. Of course it could also be a warped fret board that will make you and anyone within earshot cry. Be cautious! Musical classifieds can be of enormous help if you are seeking out a moderately priced Les Paul that may not be brand new, but has been cared for and treated well for some time. Guitarists love their guitars (except when they're smashing them into pieces on stage) and most will have been very kind to those guitars they are forced to part with for forces beyond their control. But this is not a guarantee! Always try before you buy! The local pawn shop is another place budding guitarists can seek out their Gibson's. Buying from a pawn shop requires the same caution applied to musical classifieds. Some will allow you to plug the guitar into an amp in-store so that you might get a feel for the instrument. These aren't exactly common though, so if you have the opportunity make sure and take it!
What Else Do I Need?
The ability to play guitar is definitely a plus. However, if you lack the necessary skill, rest easy that at one point in time every famous guitarist in history picked up a guitar and stared at it like a caveman seeing fire for the first time. You have to start somewhere. A Les Paul may not be able to teach you how to play it, but it can sure make learning a whole lot easier and more rewarding. Good luck!
