The symbolism in both posters is to do with 'mateship' a big part of Australian male culture - you stand by your mates and help them out when they need you to.All Australian army volunteers will be 'Mates' standing shoulder to shoulder and fighting together.
The symbolism in the second poster is to do with sport.Before and during WW1, Western culture saw war - like sport - as a noble, invigorating activity and therefore socially and culturally desirable. The poster equates war as almost being a game, like sport, and just as enjoyable.
Fortunately, Western society has moved away from such cultural similes since 1918.
