Queen News
As a business coach, I am always listening for where my clients may be experiencing blocks in growing their organizations. And one place where my clients often experience a block is around delegating. The good news is that there are specific steps one can take to make it easier to do. One of the great things about entrepreneurs is their ability and eagerness to take on more; to shoulder more responsibility. But this can also become a block when we step over the line of taking on more than we ought to. In my experience as a business coach, there is a mental shift that is often needed in order to be ready to delegate. And creating this shift can actually be fun. Perhaps by reading about a recent conversation I had with a client, you'll see what I mean.
This client (let's call her Cindy) knows that one of the steps she needs to take soon is to hire an assistant to handle a list of details that continues to grow as she builds her business, increasing the number of strategic partners, turning up her social media presence, and creating mainstream media opportunities, and all of the follow-ups that are part of that picture. And even though she knows she needs to do this, there is a part of her that resists it greatly--on the surface the resistance gets expressed as "I'm just too busy to think about it," with the result being that she has yet to take the time to get clear on what she's looking for. But that isn't the whole story.
There are a couple of other things going on here as well, just below the surface. The first is that Cindy feels that in hiring an assistant, she will have to give up a measure of control. Cindy is a perfectionist and is also very accomplished, so for her there is a lot on the line in "turning things over" to another person. What if he or she doesn't do things the way she would do them?! And the other critical element of resistance here is that Cindy hasn't been ready to receive the help that delegation implies (more on that below).
So Cindy and I were in a coaching session and I asked her if she would be willing to play a little game. The game is called "Pretend I've Hired an Assistant" and it's easy to play. What she is gong to do is to act as if she has already hired the perfect person, one who has the skill set and personality strengths that have him or her be a perfect fit for Cindy's team. Then she will begin jotting down throughout the day a list of all the things that she is handing off to the assistant, and how wonderful it feels that so-and-so is now handling all this stuff, and doing it very well. I further suggested we give this person a name to help make it even more real, and I expected it to be a woman's name because Cindy had said earlier that she thought the successful candidate would likely be a woman.
As we talked further, Cindy shared that in fact she wasn't sure it had to be a woman, so I half-jokingly suggested we use a name like "Gene (Jean)" or "Chris" or "Pat" to keep the gender neutral. And Cindy said, "My assistant is going to have a much more interesting name than that! How about Precious?!" And as we laughed together at this wonderful suggestion, another thought occurred and I said, "I think you've just hired a drag queen!" To which she replied without missing a beat, "I think that would be awesome! Then she can do my hair and make-up, too!"
So Cindy is currently getting to know her new "girl" Friday, reveling in how great it is to have just the right person at her side to handle a slew of things that she herself no longer needs to worry about. She is writing down on a daily basis the various tasks that she is handing over and how great it feels to be doing exactly that.
And what I imagine is also happening is that while Cindy is getting a little more comfortable with the idea of relinquishing some control, she also is doing some internal shifting so that she is ready to receive the help...to no longer be making up that she has to do it all herself. And this is a key piece: we must be willing to receive the help; otherwise, it will be much more challenging to ask for it.
I invite you to consider whether you need your own version of Precious on your team, and then begin to act as if that person is already here; right beside you working seamlessly to help you create the impact you are meant to have through your business. Your assistant may not wear size 10 pumps, but hopefully his or her contribution will help you focus on those critical items that really do need your personal touch.
