In today's economy it's essential to get the most you can for your purchasing dollar. So there's no sane reason to over pay for Rare Elvis when there are large numbers of them for sale on eBay. Do you have some "old stuff" laying around the house? Do you have a lot of artwork? Or maybe you are a collector just for the love and fun of it rather than for the potential value of the items. You might be wondering what these items are worth - if anything at all. Recent inventory jobs have piqued our interest to see what a Beatles album and an Elvis Presley collectors plate might be worth.
For records - the old vinyl 78s and 45s - to receive the greatest value, you'll need the paper sleeves for the 45s and mint condition covers for the albums. Top dollar comes to those which are still sealed.
Unfortunately, according to Continental Records Company, LTD, the value of common, best-selling phonograph records from any year (1901-1999) were pressed in the millions and have no value at all. However, if you have any "rare" records, titles sought after by record collectors, then that could be another story. Thousands of records made in the past 60 years sell for more than $100 each - the vast majority from the 1950s and early 1960s. A few very rare records sell for more than $10,000 each!
I checked on eBay and found 45s starting at 98 cents and albums - with bids - over $100. For example, one item is ... "BEATLES With The UK 1st Press STEREO LP Nr MINT Superb" condition, with a top bid to date of $128.
The Elvis plate is another story. Purchased years ago for $45, these were only bringing around $2-$5 on eBay. Of course, the company selling the plates advertised that they would increase in value!
Often people purchase collectible items like the Elvis plate, believing that 'some day' they will be worth something. Depending on the interest in the product and the economy, they might be right. Before the economy took a down-turn, these plates were selling for at least the original purchase price. But during these last few years, people we selling collectibles to pay bills buy groceries. The market was flooded with this type of decorative item/collectible and it drove the prices way down. In addition to saturating the market, there were few people wanting to purchase these products. Those who might have at one time been a candidate as a buyer are not spending their money on collectibles.
Check your garage, your basement and your attic - you just might find one of those gems. If not, you'll have had a nice stroll down memory lane...and that's worth something!
